coffee in melbourne

Market Lane
When I first moved to Melbourne a couple years ago, I have to admit that, coffee-wise, I was drawing parallels with the US, expecting a caramel-flavoured, Starbucks-frappuccino sipping crowd. Strangely Starbucks failed miserably when they tried to get into the Australian market. This place was definitely different, as they learned to their own expenses...

As I found out, discovering one better coffee place after the other, Melbourne did not only have a long lasting coffee culture, it was obssessed with it! Today, 5 years after arriving in Melbourne, and following extensive research around the globe, I can safely say that I have never seen a place which takes coffee as seriously as this city. Nowhere will you find this many specialty roasters offering exotic, high-quality single estate beans, and Synesso-wielding baristas with caffeine-molecules tattooed on their forearms.

Here are a couple of what I consider to be the best coffee places in Melbourne. This list is not set in stone though, as new places keep popping up & previously great places eventually get invaded by hipsters and go downhill from there...
